Approach to reviewing -- Time Out Piece

Win or lose? Journalism in print today seems to be dwindling down to a mere non-existence. The new world of blogs, webzines, etc will soon take over the writing universe. Donna Seaman believes that there is more traditional editorial professionalism online, while others seem to think that there is something better about print. Perhaps maybe they just don’t want things to change. The only thing that they seemed to agree about was that they like that there aren’t any word counts online. It is funny how no one seemed to think that blogs aren't competing with the work of the professional journalism establishment, but complementing it rather.

This generation is changing into an Ipod frenzied, text message, touch screen phone, and Internet world. In fewer words, a technology generation. If you don’t know how to work a computer than you are shit out of luck. Noticeably some critics like the change of the new media and some don’t. There were quite a few good points that each and every person had to say in the Time Out blog but the one that stood out to me the most was Donna. Typically, the debate about blogs today is framed as a duel to the death between old and new journalism. Many bloggers see themselves as the best top of line writers, striking blows for truth-telling authenticity against the media. Many newsroom journalists see bloggers as wannabe amateurs badly in need of some skills and some editors.

In reference to the comment made about qualifications of a critic, Donna’s point seemed to be the most valid and heartfelt. Passion is the drive for anyone, whether they are a critic, a graphic designer, or even a Nascar driver. The more driven one is, the better they will be at what ever it is that they are pursuing. Passion leads to discipline and immersion. Another good point was to read. An avid reader will be an enhanced writer.
